CONSUMERS’ BEHAVIOUR TOWARD SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Today’s consumers have raised their awareness about the environment when doing their shopping. Preference toward recyclable materials for sustainable packaging

Represented by a research of scholars from The Bucharest University of Economic and Bucharest Dimitrie Cantemir Christian University in Romania, Romanian consumers prefer the sustainable packaging, which is made out of paper, glass, and cardboard… Among them, 52.9% of shoppers opt for products with packaging from cardboard. 

This result is related to a concern for environmental protection since paper and cardboard are the most recyclable material and give the least impact on the environment and glass is a reusable packaging. 

Willingness to spend more for products with sustainable packaging

The survey, conducted by the Boston Consulting Group on 15000 consumers in US, Europe and South America, has pointed out that 74 percent of questioned shoppers are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging. 

Also, according to this survey, nearly half of consumers would turn away from harmful packaging, especially plastic packaging, regarding to ocean pollution. 

Design of eco-packaging and consumer’s awareness on brand’s sustainable packaging message

According to a research by Magnier and Schoormans, packaging is the main means of communication regarding the environmental friendliness of the packaging. Consumers evaluate the environment-friendliness of the packaging through its design elements such as material and color. 

The authors pointed out that the fiber-based packaging was perceived by consumers as more environmentally friendly than the plastic packaging. These perceptions were conveyed better to consumers if there is an environmental claim displayed on the packaging.
