Green heart of corrugated cardboard

Gifco: for over 60 years the "green heart" of corrugated cardboard

Gifco is part of Assografici and the Confindustria system: it was founded in the early 50s and since then has concentrated its activity in the development of solutions aimed at saving resources, reducing environmental impact and protecting forest heritage.

In Italy today, 9 out of 10 packages are produced by companies associated with GIFCO. Of the almost 6.5 billion square meters of corrugated cardboard produced in 2015, 5.8 billion square meters (weighing about 3.3 million tons) were produced in fact by the factories and by the factories belonging to the group, which represent precisely 90% of the national corrugated market.
And Italy is still the leading producer of corrugated cardboard in Europe, after Germany.  GIFCO associates 69 plants producing corrugated cardboard and 364 boxes. In Italy, almost half of the national corrugated cardboard production is concentrated in Lombardy (with more than 1 and a half billion square meters and a 23.8% share in the most productive region in 2015), Emilia-Romagna and Marche (which together account for 23% of national production). The performance of the macro-area of Lazio-Umbria-Abruzzo is interesting in 2015, with a growth of 16.3% and now covering 6.9% of national production.

Looking at the product sectors, food (fruit and vegetables, fresh and processed products, drinks, fish, meat and chickens) is the primary destination of this material, with a market share of 57%. The remaining 43% of the boxes in circulation in 2015 was used by non-food sectors, from household appliances to building, from the engineering and pharmaceutical industries, from furnishings to hygiene, to cosmetics and cleaning for the home, etc.

Corrugated cardboard growing with e-commerce and agri-food

Packaging in corrugated cardboard, a healthy industry that grows thanks to e-commerce and agri-food. Italy is the second largest producer in Europe, after Germany.

Every year, with this material, almost 6.5 billion square meters of surface are produced in Italy. It is corrugated cardboard, one of the greenest packaging materials in circulation. 100% natural, sustainable (9 packs out of 10 are recovered every year) friend of the forests (for each tree cut to produce virgin fiber, 3 are planted). In addition to this it is very resistant and extremely versatile, and allows the maximum degree of customization of the packaging, allowing to better enhance the product content and the brand.

Features that make it the ideal packaging for the protection and transport of products, and become certainty of results thanks to GIFCO, the Italian Group Fabbricanti Cartone Corrugated, which in Turin met its associates for the annual budget meeting of the activities carried out in the 2015. The sector in 2015 recorded a total national production - on the surface - of 6,455,574,000 square meters (with a weight of about 3.62 million tonnes), with a growth of 1.69% on 2014.

This is the third consecutive positive result in recent years. And confirming the state of health of the sector, the turnover of the companies that compose it amounts to about 3.8 billion euro. In spite of a not always rosy national economic context, the corrugated cardboard industry therefore remains stable and strong, guaranteeing employment to over 15 thousand workers.

"The positive signs continue - announces the president of GIFCO, Amelio Cecchini - in the first half of 2016, in fact, the production in square meters has grown by 2.5%, compared to the first six months of 2015". To support this positive trend is first of all the agri-food sector, which is destined for 57% of corrugated packaging. "Then we must consider the exponential growth of e-commerce: - continues the president of GIFCO - a fundamental element for the development of our supply chain, where corrugated cardboard is the packaging par excellence for shipments of goods purchased online".
Today, according to data from the Netcomm Observatory - Milan Polytechnic presented during the annual GIFCO meeting, 1.3 billion people worldwide make purchases online. 300 million in Europe; in Italy users who shop at least once a month on the web are 19 million.
