QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT ECOSLEEVE PLUS

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT ECOSLEEVE PLUS

Due to the numerous questions from partners all over the world about our new innovative Eco-Packaging product EcoSleeve Plus, we are here to try and answer all the questions about this outstanding packaging solution.

  1. What is EcoSleeve Plus?

EcoSleeve Plus is a safe and sustainable packaging solution for fragile product. It has 2 layers: one corrugated paper lining and another flat paper coating. Its name comes from its sleeve shape, its recycled and recyclable paper material, as well as the extra protection it could provide to the packed item.

  1. What are the advantages of EcoSleeve Plus?

EcoSleeve Plus is a great solution for your product’s safety. The specialty is in 2 main components in our EcoSleeve Plus: one layer of corrugated paper covered by a flat paper layer outside. The inside paper flute is a cushion-like layer which is designed to protect your product from any crash and shock during handling or transporting. Outer flat paper fastens the packaging and also minimizes the space when loading into big overpacking box. It also allows for printing, which is a great marketing plus!

  1. Can it be recycled?

Yes! As for other Botta Packaging Eco-products, EcoSleeve Plus is certified by ATICELCA, the Italian Certification Institution, to be suitable for Paper recycling. The sleeve itself is made of recycled paper thus fulfilling the aim of a circular economy within the packaging industry.

  1. What is it difference between standard Eco Sleeve and Eco Sleeve Plus?

Standard EcoSleeve is composed of one layer of corrugated paper, hence it is elastic to fit different sizes of items. Standard EcoSleeve can be used for different sizes of cylindrical bottles, vases or flasks..

On the other hand, EcoSleeve Plus has a flat paper coating outside so it does not have the same flexibility of Standard EcoSleeve but dimensions are catered to overcome this. In return, the flat paper helps to tighten the package so that it is unloosenable. Also, in term of aesthetics, Eco Sleeve is better as both inner and outer packaging and allows for personalized printing.

WHAT COULD WE DO WITH ECO TAPE COMPOSTABLE?

Plant, Isolated, Human, Strawberry, Soil, Bud, Natural

Eco Tape Compostable is not just normal adhesive but also a sustainable tape. For its wonderful biodegradability and compostability, the Eco Tape could probably be used for other certain application. Let us give you some ideas how to use our sustainable tape:

Use Eco Tape Compostable for sealing paper boxes or other eco-packaging

As other adhesive tape, this Eco Tape Compostable could be used to seal your packages. But it would be specifically suitable for using with other eco-packaging types like corrugated boxes or any compostable materials. There is no doubt in its toughness and durability as we already test its adhesion strength on steel. It is also easy to be removed afterward and could be classified as normal plastic waste or PLA material for recycling. The transparent film is also appropriate for all kinds of packages regardless to their colors and materials.

For bundling sprout's and flower's root with soil

If you love gardening or own a plant nursery house, this Eco Tape Compostable is perfect to bundle the tree’s root with soil. It’s not necessary to remove the tape when you grow the seedlings on the ground or bigger pot as this eco-tape would be self-biodegraded in normal condition within 6 months. It will help you to save time without leaving the toxic substances with our soil. Indeed, once it is composted with other bio-fertilizer, our Eco Tape Compostable could be the food for your plants also thanks to its natural origin from sugarcane, corn and rubber tree.

For bundling bio waste

No more struggling with some bio waste in your garden or warehouse, you can easily bundle them with Eco Tape Compostable. Together with other botanic trash, the tape with its PLA film can be industrially composted into fertilizer for growing plants. Or else, it could be biodegradable in nature.

Eco packaging solutions must be designed to leave the minimum effect on environment along the packaging chain. For this reason, biodegradability and compostability are the most 2 valuable features we consider when releasing our Eco Tape Compostable. Together with our eco-friendly product line, we expect to ‘greenize’ the packaging industry. For more details about this product, please check it here.

COMPREHENSIVE ECO-PACKAGING SOLUTION WITH ECO TAPE COMPOSTABLE

When mentioning about packaging trash, people usually think of plastic container; however, one of the major plastic pollution sources is also adhesive tapes. This plastic tape kind is widely used in packaging, which create significant and frequent waste after disposal. Understanding this fact, Botta Packaging has provided a new Eco Tape Compostable with the aim to provide a comprehensive “green” solution to our customers. Along with our other eco-friendly products, this compostable adhesive tape will fulfill the sustainability of your packaging completely.

What is Eco Tape Compostable?

Our Eco Tape Compostable is the adhesive tape which is biodegradable and compostable. Indeed, our product has been tested in TÜV’s laboratory for these features. The results show that 90% of this adhesive tape will self-biodegrade within a half of year due to its PLA film’s natural origin. When composted with other bio-trash for 90 days, it would be fragmented into sieves less than 2mm in diagram.

Could it be mighty enough for your package?

Eco Tape Compostable can replace normal tape in packaging. In fact, its biodegradability and compostability do not reduce its strength and toughness. You can easily use it with any corrugated box. If those cardboards can bear your heavy product, then our compostable tape can be used for sealing those packages. This eco-friendly tape can be used also for packing machine like PVC tape.

How sustainable is our Eco Tape Compostable?

Firstly, it is produced with natural and renewable materials. The transparent film is made of polylactide (also known as Polylactic acid) obtained from corn, sugar beet or sugar cane. For that reason, it is named as PLA film. The adhesive is made from natural rubber to make sure that the tape is plant-based, no fossil fuel used along the production chain.

The other point is its possibility for waste treatment. This tape can be thermally recycled to produce energy for heating purpose. Or else, it could be disposed with other plastics for recycling into the new resin. But even if it is not collected for professional waste treatment, our Eco Tape Compostable, as shown in its name, can be composted together with other organic substances to feed your trees.

We understand that firms are looking for better sustainable solution in their product packaging and it could be very annoying if your eco-packaging is sealed by a PVC adhesive tape. This Eco Tape Compostable should be widely used to conquest packaging waste problem in our industry.

Why should we use the Eco Tape Compostable in packaging?

Adhesive, Brown, Buff, Packaging, Polyproylene, Tape

Packaging waste is an undeniable problem in our industry and most of the giant companies are trying to find a solution to minimize its effect on our environment. With Eco Tape Compostable product, we have taken another step toward a thorough sustainable picture of packaging world. If you are still in doubt to change the habit of using PVC tape to our Eco-Tape, here are some reasons for your consideration to take the right decision:

Eco Tape Compostable helps to reduce plastic waste

According to a research on Globe News Wire, the adhesive tape market is predicted to be worth USD 85.9 billion by 2026; the increasing demand comes along with the increasing after-use disposal. More or less, the huge dumping of plastic tape can cause significant environmental problem. And the plastic recyclability is very limited compared to other materials; or even when it is all recycled, the impact on environment of its recycling procedure is also worse than the recycling of other materials. It’s time for us to find a more sustainable replacement.

This Eco Tape Compostable can help to reduce PVC trash from normal tape and it doesn’t leave any negative effect to environment. In fact, after disposal, it could be self-biodegraded in natural condition or composted with other organic rubbish. Or else, it could also be classified as plastic waste for recycling into new resin or new PLA granules.

Made from nature

About the production chain, sustainable materials are used to reduce the harmful effects on environment. PLA film is made from corn, sugarcane or beets while the adhesive is extracted from natural rubber tree. They are all renewable source with short life cycles and easily to be reproduced.

Suitable for your brand to pursue a sustainable path

We use the tape for sealing most of the product packages. Hence, you can’t say your packaging is 100% eco-friendly if you still use a PVC tapes on it. For this reason, if you want a complete sustainable packaging solution, this Eco Tape Compostable is something which you should consider. The use of this eco-tape could be listed as one of the environmentally friendly point of your product packaging which can draw the attention of green consumers. In the end, you can be proud that your packaging is totally eco-friendly.

Pursuing a sustainable path for packaging is always the motto of Botta Packaging. With our Eco Tape Compostable, we are proud to say that our customer’s packages are equipped with a thorough eco-friendly materials, both for PLA film or adhesive. But the choice is yours to choose a right method which shows your corporate social responsibility toward environment.

ANTI GREENWASH MOVEMENT AND THE USE OF RIGHT SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Many brands and products claim to follow the eco-friendly path as a marketing strategy to win consumer’s sympathy and notice. However, if you just want to make use of this method without actually following a sustainable practice, your products might be boycotted and that advertising campaign will be noticed as “greenwash” by your customers. Today, Botta Packaging will talk about anti greenwash campaign among consumer and the need for choosing right sustainable packaging.

What is greenwash?

Greenwashing, also known as “green sheen”, is when brands and marketers mislead consumers by a false message about environmental practice of their product. They try to engage their goods with an eco-friendly impression to consumers why it is not really produced in that way. Most of them spend more resources to advertise themselves as environmental conscious brands rather than to really make their product sustainable.

Anti greenwash campaign against wrong conception about paper industry

Two Sides Magazine has started their “anti greenwash” campaign against the wrong conception about paper production since 2010. According to them, the wrong messages like “Go green – Go paperless” are deceptive and have no scientific claim. In fact, in Europe, both paper and printing industry only account for 0.6% of greenhouse gas while ICT cause around 2% of total emission. Paper industry is also one of the most sustainable industry in term of circular economy, recycling and using renewable resources.

The right choice for sustainable packaging to avoid greenwashing your brand

As the consequence, if you try to draw attention from consumers about your sustainable packaging, please choose the right one. The right concept of sustainable packaging is not just from your advertisement, but from renewable material and recycle ability of the packaging itself. Just a simple paper packaging can be worth more than any expensive marketing campaign. Besides, it’s better for brand to use paper packaging without heavy aluminum or plastic coating which limits the recyclability paper. Botta Packaging encourages our customers to use sustainable packaging from their environmental awareness, not just for a greenwash of their brand.

UNDERSTANDING ABOUT FOREST MANAGEMENT TO PAPER INDUSTRY

Apart from recycled fiber, wood chip is also an important raw material in paper industry. For this reason, many people raised a doubt about the sustainability in Botta Packaging’s product; nevertheless, it turns out that forestation and forest management have become the vital part of the eco-friendliness in paper production.

The need for forest management in paper industry

Though wood is a renewable material, more than anyone else, the paper producers know that it takes time for the forest to grow. And they are also doing their best to protect their material source. Two solutions for this matter are the partly usage of recycled fiber and forest management.

A well-planned forest management scheme will result in the sustainability in both environmental and economical aspects.  Indeed, the forests grown for making paper has brought back multiple benefits to local economy and inhabitants in remote area, biodiversity and ecosystem balance. The income from selling wood chips to paper producers motivates local people for forestation. According to Two Sides Magazine, between 2005 and 2015, European forest has been added up with 44000 kms no matter that this area provides up to 90% of wood fiber needed by paper industry.

Forest management scheme

The work of managing the forestation and industrial logging are done by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). FSC and PEFC will make sure forestation and logging are sufficient for the reproduction of the wood in jungles so that ecosystem is maintained. The legal timber for trading must be from the source certified by FSC or PEFC and, in return, these organizations will be responsible for tracing the source of certified timber. Two Sides Magazine also cited that more than two third (70%) of European forests were certified by one of these 2 organizations.

Finally, solution for sustainability is also from people’s awareness as not many people realize the impact of forest management. Only few people know about FSC and PEFC’s certification and take notice to choose the paper products from certified material source. Industries which are using woods from sustainable sources must give a hand to promote the forest management scheme to the public.

WHAT DO EUROPEAN CONSUMERS THINK ABOUT PAPER PACKAGING?

Your firms are struggling to make your product greener and more sustainable by changing to paper packaging. But before your final decision, you are wondering how your customers think about this paper-based solution. In late 2018, Pro Carton – the Association of European Cartonboard and Carton manufacturers, released an report for “European Consumer Packaging Perceptions study”. Let Botta Packaging help you tackle the consumer’s insight about our products with some interesting information in this report.

How consumers concern about environment when considering paper packaging?

Among around 7000 consumers across 7 European countries joining Pro Carton’s survey, 68% of them claim that they care about eco-friendliness and the number is higher for Italy (73%). Majority of Spanish shoppers in the research has changed their shopping habit to reduce the packaging dumping into our ocean. For this matter of littering, they consider about the materials of packaging to make it less harmful for environment after being disposed. Three forth of consumers in 7 investigated European countries stated that their purchasing decision partly depended on the impact of product’s packaging to environment. For this reason, paper packaging might be a solution for your firms toward ecofriendly path.

Consumer’s actions toward sustainability

You might also be curious about how consumers response to environmental problem in general and paper packaging specifically. According to Pro Carton’s research, the actions taken by consumers vary across their ages. In general, youngsters, who are between 19 and 49 years old, opt to purchase more eco-packaged products as a solution for environmental problem. On the other hand, the elderly, from 49 to over 60 years old, tend to recycle more of their waste.

Media play an important role in educating people for their awareness of environmental problems. 74% of consumers in the study said they were influenced by the message on media platforms about packaging waste and decided to change their purchasing habit.

Why should it be paper packaging?

For the above reason, it is truly a right decision to choose the paper packaging as a matter of fact that paper material meets both youngster’s need for an eco-friendly packaging and the requirement of the elderly for the recyclability. Indeed, 45% of Europeans believe that cardboard is the most recyclable form of packaging.  Being made of natural renewable material is also one of their concerns about packaging during purchasing experience.

ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS WILLING TO PAY MORE FOR SUSTAINABILITY?

Consumers of the 21st century are more and more considering about sustainability when making their shopping decision. But all research, development or innovations toward eco-friendly products might cost brands more than the conventional ones. The question is “are those customers willing to pay more for sustainability?”. Botta Packaging has helped you collect the results from recent research and the answer is “yes”!

Research saying about consumer’s behaviour toward sustainability

In early 2019, CGS – a company specialized in business applications and outsourcing services has released a report on their Retail and Sustainability Survey in US. Their survey showed that, American consumers are willing to pay more for sustainability. Two third of people joining the research claim that they would consider about eco-friendliness when going shopping and 47 percent of surveyed people are willing to pay more for the sustainable products.

In Europe, FMCG Gurus – a company providing market research and insight into consumer attitudes and behaviours across the food, beverage and supplement markets have made a similar research in the same year.  The result shows that more than a half of European consumers in their study are happy to pay a premium price for sustainable goods. The research also revealed about the consumer’s trend: shoppers are changing their shopping and diet habits to become more eco-friendly such as buying the local products from farms and reducing the dairy products.

How brands can promote their corporation social responsibility?

According to Paul Magel, President of Business Applications division, CGS, “to create a loyal customer base, brands must be transparent about the materials and development behind their products.”

Choosing a green material for products or packaging is very important to convey an sustainability message to consumers. At Botta Packaging, we realize the need of our paper packaging is rising in the market. We are working our best to give more solutions for customers so that they could follow an eco-friendly path for their product as the expectation of consumers all over the world.

FMCGs’ actions toward sustainable packaging

Fast – moving consumer goods are packaged products sold to consumers for their daily needs, which is quick consumed and priced at low value. For this reason, they are known as the products with short life span, high turnover and, as a result, high volume of packaging scraps. Plastics is the main packaging material in FMCGs, which raises up the waves of backlash from consumers for the problems related to packaging wastage. The race for sustainable packaging is vital to FMCG companies for both their brands’ images or marketability and our environment.

FMCG’s R&D activities for sustainable packaging

Many researches toward green material for sustainable packaging have been made by FMCG companies. One of significant innovations is Bio-Plastics which is HDPE obtained from renewable sources with less fossil fuel used. However, this kind of bio-plastics is still non-biodegradable and it still remains the matter of waste management and recycling.

In fact, the recyclability for plastics is inconsistent to the volume of plastics dumping. According to the statistics from McKinsey & Company,  in Europe, only about 40% of plastics are recycled while recycled rate for paper-based products is 80%. For that reason, FMCGs have tried to replace the plastic packaging by a more sustainable packaging as paper-based one. Other innovations in paper packaging have been made to replace the plastics such as paper- packaging with aluminium coating for liquid or Botta Packaging’s eco-envelope to replace the bubble wrapping for fragile goods.

FMCG’s actions toward sustainable packaging

Actual actions have been made by FMCG company toward the sustainable packaging. Also, according to McKinsey & Company, the top 100 FMCG companies have made public declarations for their decisive commitment to solve the problem of packaging wastage. Among them, 60 companies emphasize on spreading the recycled message to consumer and focus on the matter of rubbish treatment. In the meanwhile, 26 of them act on reducing the total packaging for their products by minimizing the packaging layers and packaging weight or eliminating completely the packaging for their products.

Only 14 companies in the top 100 opt to invest in the innovations and systematic changes. These systematic changes include the effort to change the consumer’s habit toward sustainability, such as refilling system in supermarket to encourage consumers using their own package, or the selection of suppliers or partners who followed the sustainable practice.

To summarize, the public attention to sustainable packaging solution from FMCG companies is reasonable due to the fact that these products create high and frequent volume of rubbish from their short-life products. For this reason, FMCG companies are under great social pressure to innovate and change for a sustainable packaging to enhance the consumer’s experience in the new eco-friendly era.
