CONTRIBUTION DIVERSIFICATION FOR POLYCOUPLED PACKAGING

The contribution diversification for paper-dominated poly-coupled packaging is an important initiative that represents a further step forward in the modulation of the Conai Environmental Contribution (CAC) according to the actual recycling of packaging in different materials.

The modulation of environmental contributions provided for by the extended liability schemes for producers is indeed one of the cornerstones of the new approach proposed at Community level, to prevent upstream the environmental impact of packaging and promote its careful design. It is therefore one of the most effective levers to prevent the environmental impact of packaging, which Conai promotes within its strategy for the Circular Economy; this is accompanied by initiatives to support companies on the issues of Eco-Design and Design For Recycling.

For the paper industry, the diversification project was initially aimed at improving the efficiency of the process of valorisation of the most complex cellulose-based packaging to be recycled, consolidating and developing collection and selection activities for dedicated recycling,

Source: Ecopackaging

The course includes an experimental phase, of at least 12 months from October 2020, with a new declarative forms with equal environmental contributions, but with a clear distinction of the types of packaging that will be subject to diversification (poly-coupled categories with a paper component of less than 80%).

We remind you that for the purposes of the Conai Environmental Contribution, poly-coupled packaging with paper prevalence (or packaging coupled with other materials) means packaging consisting of two or more materials that cannot be separated manually in a structural way, where the predominant material in terms of weight is paper and the weight of the non-cellulosic material is still more than 5% of the total weight of the packaging.

HANDBOOK 2021: SOSTAINABLE LOGISTICS AND PACKAGING FOR E-COMMERCE

Handbook 2021: sustainable logistics and packaging for e-commerce.

On 11 May 2021, it was presented at the Netcomm Forum 2021, the Handbook 2021.

It is a practical guide for companies that want to develop their own logistic project for ecommerce and new retail. A written guide with the contribution of over fifteen experts and members of the Netcomm Consortium. Comieco also participated in the drafting, with other members.

The main topics addressed concern: order and warehouse management; delivery, return and last mile; packaging; customer care; digital export logistics; multi-channel logistics; marketplace logistics; payment and logistics.

There are sections dedicated to advice for companies and examples of business cases.

Some of the company examples in the guide are: the Fratelli Carli case; the Easycoop case; the Ebay network etc.

The reason for this guide is linked to the fact that e-commerce is a growing phenomenon.

In fact, e-commerce represents over 12% of the retail market in the world and digital channels influence and guide over 50% of purchasing choices.

Source:  Life cycle assessment from Botta Packaging

Metropolitan areas contribute to growth, with e-commerce penetration rates double the average of the country, but e-commerce has now penetrated all Italian homes.

In this context, logistics and packaging play a primary role. They are the engine of e-commerce, for customers are among the main critical factors in choosing the sites from which to buy. The logistics for the e-commerce is also a true revolution in the revolution of the e-commerce: they change the flows of the goods that are separated from the flows of the orders and also from the mobility of the customers.

Packaging is the key element in customer service, but with the increase in online purchases, Packaging is also increasing and there is an increasing need to find sustainable solutions capable of reducing the impacts of production and optimising recycling and recovery.

PACKAGING AND MARKETING

Packaging and advertising go hand in hand. In fact, as already described in several articles, the communicative function of packaging has now assumed a strategic role both for the sale of the product and for the advertising of the brand.

For this reason packaging is commonly called silent salesman (silent seller) because, if properly designed, it represents the first factor of choice, often decisive, for buyers as well as the iconic symbol of the company, like for example the bottle of Coca-Cola and that of Campari Soda. The box has therefore become a real communicating form that does not just contain and protect the product but tells it by advertising, at the same time, the brand. This communicative function has made the link between packaging and advertising indissoluble, so much so that the boxes themselves have often been the protagonists of numerous advertising campaigns.

Over time, the promotional function of the packaging has extended well beyond the corporate advertising strategies to become one of the most used tools in personal branding programs of freelancers. Marketing strategies used to advertise their work and skills in an original and impact way, while maintaining customer loyalty.

However, personal branding is not the only form of professional promotion that favours the combined use of packaging and advertising. Very often, in fact, creative and professionals rely on packaging design even for private self-promotion actions that do not aim at branding. A creative solution, far from the classic business cards, that can make the difference within a highly competitive job market.

WATER WASTE – A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Today, thousands of people are still dying due to the lack of water or its contamination. This happens especially in developing countries while in the modern world the water is also used as a source of energy; furthermore, a large quantity is wasted doing everyday actions. This diversity is not acceptable, but the inadequate distribution or resources is not a new issue.

It is important to distinguish wastewater made by people in their houses and wastewater related to big industries.

As for companies, the water used in the production chain by industries becomes polluted and even toxic for our health. So, when corporate social responsibility and the attention for circular or green economy are not the main objectives, the result is a huge wastewater and serious consequences for the environment.

First, it is necessary to consider the impact on sea wildlife: the coral reef is disappearing, and experts have found microplastics inside the body of various fishes that we eat and this means that we pollute the environment and then the effects are toxic.

Polluted waters have a separate treatment in the process of recycle of in a circular economy vision. However, this implies a high cost that companies are not willing to pay because it is easier to throw them into the rivers. That is why metals, viruses, bacteria and other substances are contained in our water.

Source:  Life cycle assessment from Botta Packaging

As for people, even when we have a daily shower, we never consider the ingredients of our shampoo and scrub for instance. Microplastics are contained in these products and they enter in the water.

In conclusion, organizations are trying to fight against water waste. For instance, UNESCO has established the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). Its aim is to provide concrete solutions and knowledge in order to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

CAMPAIGN "ZERO WASTE"

Campaign "Zero Waste"

CONAI supports the initiatives of the public campaign to prevent food waste "Waste zero", organized by the Waste Watcher Institute - International observatory on food and sustainability, for a common reflection on the quantities of food not consumed, which is thrown into the trash every day and raising awareness of good practices that can be adopted.

Sustainability and eco-design are increasingly the focus of research and debate for the new characteristics required for packaging: from the reduction of raw materials used to the opportunity to use recycled material, up to a design that ensures recyclability or composability.

The European legislation of the last two years encourages the sustainable development of packaging and companies, in turn, are moving towards increasingly innovative and efficient solutions, compatible with the key role of packaging. The pack must protect, keep the product during transport and encourage its optimal storage, but as soon as it is placed on the shelf it undoubtedly affects the choice of purchase and the perception of the brand by the consumer.

But what affects the decision to buy a product, at first glance? The impact on the quality and safety of the product, from the origin of the raw materials to its origin is decisive for 9 out of 10 Italians (89%), and so the guarantees provided between certification and traceability (88%).

Packaging and its environmental characteristics are also factors affecting consumer purchasing choices (73% of respondents). The reason is probably to be found in the dynamics of the relationship between product and 'sustainability in the perception of consumers. The product is sustainable, first of all, if its packaging is recyclable (for 71% of respondents) or if it is made of recycled material (69%). What if a pack is not recyclable? 1 Italian out of 4 (25%) buys it the same; 47% buys it but not willingly; 22% changes its mind and focuses on a product with the recycled or recyclable packaging, 5% - 1 Italian out of 20 - in addition to not buying it also advises against the use in the circle of friends and family.

THE OPEN RECYCLING INITIATIVE

 The Open Recycling initiative

What happens after the dumpster? Who runs the recycling cycle? And what role do we all play?

The Open Recycling initiative was created to answer these questions.

Recycle Covered is in fact the annual event promoted by Comieco that since 2001 opens the doors of the plants of the paper and cardboard recycling chain to schools, citizens, institutions, media and all those who are interested in understanding, live watching the various stages of the industrial process, what happens to paper and cardboard once delivered in the appropriate containers.

Since 2001 Ricicloaperto shows the reality of paper and cardboard recycling by showing up the most important and less known aspects of the recycling cycle. A reality made up of paper, paper and recycling plants that every day work synergistically to give new life to paper, cardboard and cardboard that we have differentiated.

Source: Botta Packaging

The aim of this project is to educate the youngest - and not only - to a conscious use of resources, to discover the industrial value of paper and cardboard recycling, the professionalism and technologies of the sector, to reassure citizens about the usefulness of their daily commitment to separate collection.

The open doors of the paper and cardboard recycling chain that has already involved over 240,000 people: every year, on the occasion of the opening to the public of the facilities, we welcomed over 15,000 visitors.

Since 2021, thanks to the acceleration of technologies, Recyclableto also switch to digital: ready to bring the cycle of paper and cardboard recycling directly in schools, homes and companies.

RECYCLING PLASTIC

Plastic recycling is the collection, sorting, and repurposing of waste plastic materials to create new and usable items out of them. This will guarantee that the vast majority of plastics generated do not wind up in landfills or polluting the environment. It is necessary to differentiate between the various kinds of plastic since they need distinct recycling procedures. As a result, there are two fundamental approaches to recycling: mechanical recycling and advanced recycling.

Mechanical recycling is the process of melting plastics and reprocessing them into new goods via the use of injection molding.  Processes such as pyrolysischemical recycling, and gasification are used in advanced recycling. When it comes to breaking down plastic materials, this method takes advantage of the chemical reaction. This includes the gathering and sorting of plastics, the washing of contaminants, shredding and resizing, the separation of materials after resizing, and the compounding of components.

Plastics production is still on the rise, owing to the cheap cost, flexibility, and wide range of uses available. According to Statista, the global plastics output reached 368 million metric tons in 2019, it is also anticipated to reach 445.25 million metric tons in 2025 and increase to about 590 million metric tons by 2050. Despite the high volume of manufacturing, only a small proportion of the waste gets recycled. These figures demonstrate how urgent it is for us to take action to address the rising numbers. Production that does not include recycling or appropriate waste management would have the unintended consequence of harming the environment. Improper plastic management results in the release of pollutants into the environment, which in turn contributes to global warming and the emission of hazardous gases into the atmosphere, making the environment unfit for human habitation. Recycling will minimize the number of raw materials required for manufacturing, help create employment, and reduce demand for new raw materials, thus helping conserve natural resources.

COVERING UP WITH "EARTH"

Covering up with “Earth”

Earth has been blessed with all the natural things that man can think of. It has been made to serve mankind and vice versa. Just to mention a few, there are trees, animals, ocean, wildlife, humans among others. These are all very important. When it comes to trees, there are so many benefits we derive from them. One of the benefits which have been chosen for this write-up is the fact that it can be used as a cover-up. Covering up with "earth" basically means packaging with corrugated paper which is made of paper pulp materials. All these are gotten from trees. When your package with cardboard you have covered up with earth.

The Paper used at BOTTA Packaging is 100% recyclable and free of polyethylene. Being corrugated makes it more sustainable for the environment. These are renewable as well as recyclable. The corrugated packages at BOTTA are reusable and cost-effective with the possibility of customization. They are also biodegradable and compostable.

These packages can be used in various sectors like cosmetics, food, healthcare, e-commerce, moving/relocation, electricals, fashion, etc. Two Sides commissioned a European consumer preferences survey in 2020 in which 62% of the consumers believe paper and cardboard packaging is better for the environment. Additionally, 70% of consumers polled claimed they were actively working to limit their use of plastic packaging. Paper is now largely regarded as a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic among consumers. This shows the market trend for them is on the rise.

With this in mind, it is high time we take advantage of what the earth has provided us with and cover up with items with paper which is far better than plastics. Paper is much more sustainable and flexible than other items used in wrapping products.

BIODEGRADABLE

While technically every material or substance is biodegradable, some take thousands of years to decompose while others take hundreds of years. To avoid causing the latter to wind up in landfills, manufacturing firms should try to utilize materials or manufacture products that degrade more quickly than those that decay over hundreds of thousands of years. This is because when they do not decompose quickly and wind up in landfills, they may release toxic methane into the environment.

When it comes to producing a product, having knowledge of goods with various times of degradation should assist production managers and businesses in general in making informed decisions about their products. As an alternative, they may use the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool to help them in their decision-making.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS MORE ECO-CONSCIOUS

How to Make Your Business More Eco-Conscious

Environmental stewardship is the new standard, and company owners should understand the best practices for making their companies more environmentally aware. This article will discuss five tips that businesses may take to become more environmentally friendly and minimize their negative environmental effect.

1. The business can monitor and evaluate greenhouse gas emissions. This contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change. They should examine their manufacturing processes to determine which stages release harmful gases and devise solutions or novel methods to assist minimize this issue.

2. Businesses also monitor their energy usage. Energy conservation should be a key concern for a business, not only because it will save money in the long run, but also because it will help maintain the environment. They may experiment with motion-activated or automated lights that turn on just when someone moves and turn off when not in use. They may also invest in solar energy, which will help mitigate the effects of climate change.

3. Their manufacturing method should incorporate recyclable resources. By using these recyclable materials, the need for new raw materials will be reduced, thus alleviating strain on natural resources. Additionally, recyclable materials decrease the quantity of trash disposed of at the end of the day since they may be repurposed.

4. Biodegradable materials are required for a business to minimize the quantity of trash that ends up in landfills unable to break down.

5. Choosing sustainable suppliers is another method for the business to contribute to environmental stewardship. For ecological packaging, I suggest BOTTA Packaging, which offers a diverse variety of packaging options for your goods.

Regardless of these factors, businesses must adhere to the laws established by the different Environmental Protection Agencies and Certified organizations in this area.

LIFE ASSESSMENT CYCLE (PROS)

When it comes to social and economic issues, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is beneficial in that it helps to remove a limited understanding of the environmental effect of a particular industry. It is evaluated to identify the entire effect of the development process, including production, distribution, use, maintenance, and recycling or disposal, as well as the final product.

The effect of global warming, resource usage, air pollution, water pollution, and CO2 emissions are all taken into account throughout the life cycle assessment. It evaluates the environmental effect of a product from the point of manufacture through to the point of use and disposal, or more accurately, from the point of manufacture to the point of disposal.

This allows decision-makers to evaluate two or more products and services and choose the one that has the least detrimental effect on the environment, thus saving time and money. It also guarantees that organizational resources are used as efficiently and effectively as possible. It contributes to energy conservation, water conservation, and land use, among other things. Reduced energy usage and material consumption contribute to lower overall production costs by lowering the cost of the manufacturing process.

Organizations can generate new ideas that will aid in the expansion of the company as a result of this approach. This tool also aids in the communication of the long-term worth of goods to customers and other interested parties. Companies may contribute to the preservation of the ecosystem by creating products that are both economically and environmentally sustainable after their environmental footprints have been measured.

From the genesis of the idea to manufacture a product until the conclusion of its useful life, this instrument is a need for every manufacturing company, and they must abide by its principles throughout the whole production process.

INNOVATIONS IN FAST FOOD PACKAGING

Fast food containers that are not recycled or composted wind up in the landfill, where they harm the environment and human health. As a result, the fast-food industry should be very cautious about the packaging used in their operations since they do not want to wind up harming the environment. Some fast-food corporations have already begun research into more environmentally friendly packaging for their products. In today's society, fast food is extremely fashionable, and it has a huge consumer base, particularly among Generation Z and Millennials. These same two generations are the ones who have made significant investments in sustainability in recent years, so if fast-food corporations want to attract their attention, they must likewise make significant investments in sustainability. It's no surprise that McDonald's and Burger King have such a big consumer base within these two generational groups.

Burger King, for example, is encouraging customers to utilize reusable packaging solutions rather than single-use containers. To do this, they are conducting a series of tests to verify that the safety of their food is not jeopardized as a result of their decision to become green. As part of their goal to decrease emissions of carbon footprint by 2025, they have also pledged to utilize renewable, recyclable, and certified sources by that time. They also aim to recycle 100 percent of all of their guest packaging in the United States and Canada by 2025.

McDonald's is another fast-food company that is making investments in sustainability by encouraging the use of reusable solutions in its operations. They would want to begin by promoting the use of reusable cups for hot beverages, similar to the Recup Programme in Germany, which began in the year 2020.

As a side point, it should be highlighted that other fast-food corporations are investing in similar solutions to acquire a large client base while also preserving and sustaining the environment. Others who have not yet looked into the field should take advantage of the chance.

RECYCLABLE FASHION

Many fashions have come and gone for quite some centuries now. A majority of people are interested in this industry because a person's clothing choices greatly affect how he or she is addressed. However, most of our clothing isn't recycled and thus is sent to the landfill. Well-liked and sustainable fashion centers on the concept of re-use, re-wear, and recycling. It is not something new but, now that millennials are a significant demographic, sustainability is getting a lot of attention.

The clothing brand H&M has purposed to use more sustainable sources for their clothing line by 2030 which is a good initiative that most clothing companies should also take up. This will help not waste resources and also reduce the amount of pollution caused by the industry.

A company named Comistra in Prato, a town in Tuscany, Italy is known for its way of recycling and sustaining fashion. They make new clothes out of old scraps. They gather used clothing, sort it by color and material, and then put it through a carbonizing process to remove contaminants. They are washed, shredded, and used to produce new garments after the carbonization process. Fabrizio Tesi, the owner of Comistra says they produce about 25 tonnes every day and 15% of all recycling clothes worldwide. This type of information should be incorporated into the curriculum of fashion schools today which would go a long way to have a huge impact on future designers to be more conscious and sustainable.

Source: Recycle design in Botta Packaging

Each of us has a role to play either by purchasing these recycled clothes and supporting environmentally friendly brands or advocating for them as this is the way forward in decreasing the needless waste of resources. Let's keep faith in our goals of an environmentally conscious society.

RECOVERY AS PART WASTE MANAGEMENT

In addition to the traditional R's, an additional R has been added, increasing the total number of R's to a total of four. The original three waste management principles - reduce, reuse, and recycle, with the addition of recovery as a fourth principle. Trash may be cleaned up and recycled by using methods such as reducing, reusing, and recycling. This may result in the recovery of energy or materials from waste. Thermal and biological processes may be utilized to generate a wide range of goods, including electricity, heat, fuel, and compost, among others. All of these benefits may be achieved via the use of research, innovation, and creativity. It is possible to use regenerated or recovered energy and materials for many diverse uses once they have been recycled.

Unless properly managed, waste items that were meant for disposal are no longer considered trash but rather sources of resources for industry and environmental conservation. It is hoped that this would help to strengthen the idea of Circular Economy, which is now getting a great deal of attention.

To achieve this, waste materials may either be disposed of in landfills, where they can biodegrade naturally, or they can be treated using extra processes. Also, the use of thermochemical technology, which encompasses the processes of gasification, pyrolysis, combustion, and liquefaction as well as other methods of energy recovery. It is predicted that as a result of everything going to waste, fewer items would go to waste without gaining any benefits from them. Due to this, along with the three R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle), it is important to give equal consideration to the idea of adding a fourth R. To prevent having a detrimental effect on the environment, we should proceed with care while carrying out this process.
