The clothing brand H&M has purposed to use more sustainable sources for their clothing line by 2030 which is a good initiative that most clothing companies should also take up. This will help not waste resources and also reduce the amount of pollution caused by the industry.
A company named Comistra in Prato, a town in Tuscany, Italy is known for its way of recycling and sustaining fashion. They make new clothes out of old scraps. They gather used clothing, sort it by color and material, and then put it through a carbonizing process to remove contaminants. They are washed, shredded, and used to produce new garments after the carbonization process. Fabrizio Tesi, the owner of Comistra says they produce about 25 tonnes every day and 15% of all recycling clothes worldwide. This type of information should be incorporated into the curriculum of fashion schools today which would go a long way to have a huge impact on future designers to be more conscious and sustainable.
Each of us has a role to play either by purchasing these recycled clothes and supporting environmentally friendly brands or advocating for them as this is the way forward in decreasing the needless waste of resources. Let's keep faith in our goals of an environmentally conscious society.
