 Where do I throw it?

We still make mistakes when sorting paper and cardboard. There are some small failings and habits that are easy to correct and change. By doing so, we ensure an increase in the quality of collection. Let's see together what to throw away in the paper and cardboard collection. 

 

In Italy, more than 1.5 million pizza boxes are used every day. This means that more than 5,000 tonnes of cardboard are disposed of exclusively from pizza take-away or delivery. The question is: does the pizza box always go into the paper and cardboard collection? The answer is no. Pizza boxes should only be disposed of with paper if they are clean and free of food residues. If it is visibly contaminated with oil or food, there are three basic steps to follow. Firstly, the food residues must be disposed of in the wet waste collection. Next, the clean lid, which is not usually soiled by pizza, must be torn off and disposed of in the paper bin. Finally, the dirty part of the cardboard should be reduced in size and put in the undifferentiated bin or, if the certified container is compostable, in the organic waste.

On the other hand, packages containing several cans, such as canned tuna, are made of cardboard and should be placed in the paper collection.

Even bread and fruit bags, when they are made of a single material, always go in the paper collection. Before throwing it away, however, make sure there are no food residues inside.

Even when fruit is packaged in cardboard trays, these should be disposed of in the paper bin, but remember to throw the peelings in the organic bin. 

For the flour bag, the flour residues must be emptied thoroughly, and then the bag can be thrown in the paper. 

 

The potato crisp packet, the popcorn container or the fried fish container cannot be disposed of in paper if the food residues cannot be removed. If they are certified and compostable, they should be put in the wet waste bin.

 Trees, our source of life                                             

The importance of trees cannot be overemphasized. Without them, our very lives are at stake and not only human life but the wildlife as well. There are several considerable benefits we derive from them. These include the trees being the very source of oxygen. The human body cannot survive more than 3 minutes without air. They also serve as natural air filters by taking away carbon dioxide which has numerous negative health effects on humans when breathed in. They also provide food, shelter, clothing, medicine, etc.

According to the US National Geographic, about 30% of the world’s land is covered by forests and plants, but they seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate irrespective of all the benefits we gain from them. We have ourselves to blame for the increment in the disappearing rates.  Many reasons can be given for the deforestation that is on a high rise, but none of them can equate to the importance we get from them as our source of life. One of the dangerous effects of cutting down trees is the acceleration of global warming by the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the increase in biodiversity loss which reduces our strive for a sustainable environment.

We all have a role to play in protecting our breath of life. First, each one of us can begin by planting at least a single tree in our backyards. Furthermore, sanctions can also be meted out to individuals caught cutting down trees, which would help deter others from doing the same. Let us also be good advocates against deforestation as these plants are living organisms that also need care and attention.

 Polylaminate Packaging

Polylaminate packaging, which was introduced to the food market to provide greater strength and protection and prolong product freshness, is highly engineered, high-performance packaging but poses serious recycling problems.  

Let's take a look at the most common varieties of composite packaging consisting of paper, plastic, and aluminum. The different layers of these materials held together by adhesives cannot be separated by hand and not all of them are recyclable.

A common type we buy is wrapping paper for cold meats, cheeses, and other fresh produce, which consists of a paper layer and a very thin plastic film that goes into the general waste stream.

The packaging of bakery products such as biscuit wrappers, usually made of paper and plastic, marked with the symbol C/PAP81 were not recyclable until a few years ago. Nowadays, almost all brands have switched to a paper-recyclable type of laminate obtained by a design intervention that has reduced the amount of plastic material in favor of the paper component. However, it is advisable to read the indications on the packaging as some product lines still use non-recyclable packaging.

Thanks to the 2020 update, there is a new method that allows paper producers, producers of items made predominantly of paper, and users of paper products such as packaging, publishing products, labels, and any paper item, in general, to check the level of recyclability on a scale of 4 classes, from A+ to C. The classes are:

• Class A+: sample easily recyclable in most paper mills
• Class A: sample recyclable in the majority of plants suitable for treating ordinary quality pulp, even from the urban separate collection.
• Class B: sample recyclable in plants suitable for treating ordinary quality pulp, including from separated urban waste collection, after adaptation of the standard recycling process. May result in a higher than average level of process waste.
• Class C: sample recyclable only after appropriate selection associated with the urban separate collection, to send it to specialized paper mills for the treatment of this type of material.
