THE CHOICE BETWEEN PAPER AND PLASTIC PACKAGING

The debate over whether to use plastic or paper packaging has gained widespread attention. As knowledge of sustainability grows, businesses and consumers are obliged to make this choice. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to the question of whether paper or plastic bags are more environmentally friendly. Numerous innovations have been made to justify either viewpoint; thus, one must evaluate both the advantages and disadvantages of these two positions. Plastics are claimed to be stronger, more flexible, and more resistant to water than their counterparts. Additionally, papers are believed to be extremely compostable and biodegradable.

When it comes to recyclability, plastic packaging created in the modern day with sustainability in mind is intended to be recyclable, provided they are not discarded and wind up in landfills, contaminating our waterways.

Recyclable plastic bags are believed to be more robust than paper bags, giving them the advantage when it comes to reusability. Additionally, they are more water-resistant, allowing them to be used many times longer than paper bags. It's worth noting that research and development efforts are increasing to create more sustainable and moisture-resistant paper packaging. BOTTA Packaging developed many of these improvements, including the Eco-Sleeve Plus and the Eco-Fix Sheet among many others.

Paper is biodegradable by nature. Paper, on average, takes between two and six weeks to biodegrade if it ends up in landfills due to improper waste management. When compared to plastics, it takes hundreds of thousands of years for plastics to degrade, depending on the materials and structure. Even so, they degrade into tiny particles that may wind up in our water bodies, contaminating them. This characteristic alone makes the paper a much superior alternative and option to plastics.

Not to mention, we'd like to pick a more environmentally friendly alternative that results in less pollution and waste. One that, if left unchecked, would not further damage our environment. BOTTA Packaging provides a range of packaging solutions in this area. Contact us now for more information about our product range.
