SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY. THE CASE OF ALDI DISCOUNTER
Have you ever asked how a supermarket can be sustainable?
In this article, we will see the approach used by the discounter Aldi.
It seems that it is the best discount store thanks to its strategy.
The organization of the Aldi store is different.
As soon as a customer enters, he sees cookies, sweets and then chips with nuts and savoury snack. In other supermarkets, the first department is those about fruit and vegetable. Then department, where there are products close to end follows. Aldi avoids wastefulness. Its limited stock, which has only 1,400 items, and its just-in-time strategy allow it to order new stock when it is needed.
Something super-perishable, such as fruit or vegetables will sell before it goes bad.
It does not have the department of bread, meat, fish, cheese, and so on. Thus, it has a smaller number of employees to pay.
95% of items have Aldi’s label and has even product in bulk.
It reduces the ullage of the product, by taking the air out of the package. It minimizes the packaging for the same amount of product. Thanks to this packaging, products are more fit on a single pallet. Hence the pallet is more fit on a truck and stocking the store can be done with lower fuel cost. Once the products are there, they take up less room, making stocking way more efficient.
Aldi’s employee loads the cardboard box full of products onto the racks. Other supermarkets try to make the shop experience as enjoyable as possible, taking care of the detail. Hence, employees stack the product onto the racks. However, this strategy allows the discounter to save time and money. Moreover, people have more place in their trolley.
The discounter does not have an own card for the customer. The costs are cheap every day for everyone, and the chance to offer a sort of customizing cost does not exist.
Aldi's employees are very quickly due to the presence of more than one barcode on the package of the product. Each one is versatile enough to fill a variety of roles and the roles are less.
The store is built to be environmentally friendly. It has LEDlighting, energy-saving freezers, and self-service cashiers.
Employees give BYO bag to the costumers, so they avoid using plastic.
The cost-saved method used by Aldi lead it to be efficient.
